Simply put, the lobe separation angle (LSA) is a measurement of how the intake and exhaust lobes are phased with each other. If all the specs remained the same what will going from a 110 to a 112 lsa do to driving characteristics? 1966 Toyota Landcruiserunder construction. I personally prefer to sacrifice the small amount more power for better idle quality. Similarly, 110 LSA is also found to be a more fabulous performer in several mechanical aspects. Anybody do any real testing on LSA in a 3.75 stroke small block chevy?I have always used 104-106 and was thinking about trying a 108 or 110 design.I know there is a lot of variables but just a general opinion from any experts. This is for motor only no nitrous.600-640 HP engine combos.Much appreciated! In general, a stock replacement camshaft with duration of less than 200 degrees will have a lobe separation angle of more than 114 degrees. (LOBE SEPARATION ANGLE)cam CRANES 110921 has the intake close at 45 degrees ABDC while the wider lsa CRANES 114681 closes the valves at 50.0 ABDC . Build your own custom newsletter with the content you love from EngineLabs, directly to your inbox, absolutely FREE! JavaScript is disabled. It had a robust powerband with tons of usable torque. Before we all start suffering from separation anxiety, we need to understand what lobe separation angle actually is and then how it affects your engine. The 112-degree cam (red lines) picked up much of the torque, but the big winner was the cam with the tightest lobe separation angle. If a street car has smaller lift and duration numbers, they might run 112 or 114. It is the angle that separates the intake and exhaust lobe for a particular cylinder, and is measured in camshaft degrees. by Kdub Sat Dec 06, 2008 11:05 pm, Post Some prefer a narrow powerband, and some prefer the broader one. An icon used to represent a menu that can be toggled by interacting with this icon. 08 Additional components used to build the stroker included a set of Comp hydraulic roller lifters, ARP head studs, and a new oil pump. by 3V Performance Sat Dec 06, 2008 4:38 pm, Post That notion is completely false. But, after comparing these two LSA based on a few mechanical aspects, such as maximum Torque, RPM, powerband, oil consumption, and many more, you will find the 106 LSA with better performance output. any input is appreciated guys, thanks. It affects the amount of valve overlap; that is the brief period of time when both the intake and exhaust valves are open.. Good cam for a lower rpm street engine. Maybe even 114. As the RPM's go up this is not as critical as the higher velocity of the air/fuel moving thru keeps it from getting contaminated. This may be of concern if you have vacuum assisted accessories, such as power brakes or steering. , . Since we were only changing the lobe separation angle, we had to make sure every variable (air/fuel, timing, water, air, and oil temps) was identical during testing. 106 LSA: The scale of efficient compression rises at 106 LSA. This is very critical for manifold vacuum, throttle response, emissions, and gas mileage. This form of short-term memory is supported by the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and is believed to rely on the ability of selectively tuned pyramidal neuron networks to persist in firing even after a to-be-remembered stimulus is removed from the environment. Depending on the engine combination, the opposite results can occur. These favorable mechanical features depict the powerful acceleration capacity of the engine with higher oil and energy consumption rate, overheating problems, and other mechanical problems. by flat4racer17 Mon May 12, 2003 1:40 pm, Post by mrsmythe Tue May 13, 2003 5:45 am, Post I just bought a 86b Webcam and Im using 1.5's. On the cranking. In the 106 LSA, the engine can reach the maximum torque, making the driving more efficient and saving energy. A narrow, more specific power band is also a product of a narrow LSA, as is a lumpy idle qualityoften referred to as the 106 sound. It will sound lovely I'm sure. In reality, a cam with 220 at 0.050" and a lobe center angle of 112 will have the exact same mechanical overlap as a cam with 217 at 0.050" and a lobe center angle of 109. Either learn to fix it, or learn to write checks. A 112-114 degree lobe center will have a better idle and produce more vacuum with less overlap. This table will create a map in your head, and I bet it will make your understanding crystal clear. Pretty much standard for an RV type cam. by ANT Tue May 13, 2003 1:08 pm, Post Introduction. Come join the discussion about popular models such as the Mustang, Galaxie, Falcon, Fairlane, Torino, Shelby and many more! My duration will be about 230 degrees. The ported heads were capable of supporting over 700 hp, so we knew they would not be restrictive on our stroker. A mobile functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was used to record cerebral oxygenation signals in the left prefrontal cortex (LPFC), right prefrontal cortex (RPFC), left parietal lobe (LPL), and right parietal lobe (RPL) and analyze the EC of the cerebral cortex. 112 will have a smoother idle, a wider power band, and will work better with fuel injection. Whatever you do, stay under 270 advertised duration and shoot for a 110 lobe separation. 2.1.2.4.2 Side-lobe suppression shall be provided in accordance with the provisions of 3.1.2.1.5.2.1 on all Mode S-only all-call interrogations. We will safeguard your e-mail and only send content you request. Your best bet would be to talk to one of the experts at a cam company to get a custom grind if you're that into the specs. It is the average centerline between both lobes and expressed in degrees ranging from 95 on the extremely narrow/tight side to upward of 120 on the wide end. (You can find an instructional video of how to do just that on our Clay Smith Cams YouTube Channel;https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57gfBu8uc6k&t=1s ). VerticalScope Inc., 111 Peter Street, Suite 600, Toronto, Ontario, M5V 2H1, Canada. Okay, have a sigh because you have opened the right door. OK, what is hydraboost, and how do you like how the cam performs??? I just installed a Comp Cams XE262 in a 9:1 350 with stock iron heads. (2002) et rappel sur une carte hors texte. But, at 106 LSA, the cranking compression may increase above the standard PSI level. 11 Doing LS cam swaps on the engine dyno is a breeze, each taking less than 1 hour. kinda off topic.. but while we're on the topic of cams, duration, lift, ect has anybody heard of using high compreshion (13:1) on pump gas, by useing alot of duration? Like one cam is 112 degree and the next is 108 the 108 cam will allow less "leakage"? This comparison highlights that the 106 LSA is a good performer in a few mechanical aspects than the 110 LSA. Nitrous engines, which make plenty of power and torque, often run wide lobe separation angles to moderate cylinder pressures and temperatures. The valve covers, valvetrain, intake manifold, harmonic balancer, front cover, timing set, and cam were yanked. An RV or towing camshaft, which is considered a mild performance or an economy cam, will often have a narrower LSA, between 112 and 114 degrees. Knife edged & profiled 4MA Cleveland crank weighing 50lbs. The piston and cylinder damage possibility is pretty low at 110 LSA. 4-linked72, what cam are you using that has a 108 LSA? 110 LSA: On the contrary, 110LSA has a higher piston-to-valve clearance rate. 2.1.3 Transponder reply modes (air-to-ground) 2.1.3.1 Transponders shall respond to Mode A interrogations in accordance with the provisions of 3.1.1.7.12.1 and to Mode C interrogations in accordance . We'll send you raw engine tech articles, news, features, and videos every week from EngineLabs. The exhaust has an opening even and a closing event. = Moderately Tight 106-104 Deg. Boom, you get the lobe separation angle of that engine. " - Voltaire. I'd also go to a 110-112 lobe separation angle. But to choose the perfect cam, all of that information needs understanding. However, in application, there is a lot more to consider. by jim martin Mon May 12, 2003 7:10 pm, Post 110 LSA: However, if you look at the rate of cranking compression at 110 LSA, you will find a reduced compression rate from the standard cranking compression PSI level. The taller lobe seperation will have a longer powerband but will have to rev higher to make the power than the lower lobe seperation! THis is a real generalization, but the weaker your heads, the more you will like the smaller centers ( 106-108) the better the heads, and the higher the compression, the more it will like the wider centers ( 112-114)everything else falls somewhere in the middle( 108-110) Once you get close with the cam centerlines, it wont make much differance if you change it up or down by 2 degrees. Realize what the engine is going in, however, as you may not be able to use the wildest cam out there. The 114o lobe will add a lot more vacuum at idle. Lower cylinder pressure is advantageous for your engine. It is the DESIGNED events that yield CENTERLINE. Engine knocking generally occurs when the burning of the fuel by the engine is uneven. It will have slightly higher vacuum at idle, feel smoother through the power curve but have a bit less midrange. The 108-degree cam offered both the most power and torque, but idle quality suffered compared to the wider LSAs. Hey guys, can anyone tell me how rough of a idle a cam would be with a 108 lobe separation? Ed JTO learn to park Joined May 31, 2009 180 Posts
